Pain, Heart Ache, and Wicked Big Smiles

The past few day out in Kansas City were some of the most exciting moments in racing in which I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing. The bitter cold, icey mud, and cheering fans made this a memorable expirence (did I forget to mention the cold).
The races began on Thursday with the "B" events, which were non championship races. Ian, Andy and myself all lined up for the "B" 30-39 race. Ian and My starting positions really could not get much worse, unless they were Andy's starting position. The air was ripe with excitment and blistering cold. Once we were all called up into the grid "it was on like donkey kong". We took off like a pack of crazied ferrets. Immediatly the guy in front of me jammed his wheel into anothers skewer, which created a horrid noise but all was well for now... Than BANG my chain snapped, we were only a couple of hundered feet into the race. What to do? I picked up my steed and began to run, by this point the pack had made a large gap on me. As I ran down the opening straight my spirits were lifted by the announcers who cheered me on and got the small crowds going also. It felt as if I ran a mile or so through the unforgiving icey ground. As I made my way to the pits I ran up on one rider which lifted me further into my adreline high. Upon entering the pits I could not find my pit bike, aaaaaaaaaaaaaa. One found I hopped on that carbon beauty and pedaled as if I were a "cocktail napkin with an outboard motor". Than immediatly began to pick off rider's, which fueled the intense fire which was churning inside of me. Man it felt great! But as most fires do it soon began to sputter out, due to lack of fitness. I still pushed on my feeble little legs for the remainder of the event. When all was said and done I finished 40th out of about 70 racers. Fairly disappointing but given the circumstances I will try not to beat myself up to much about it.
Aaah Cross how I love and hate you. Stay tuned for race reports for the following days.
