Black Hills

Spent the past few days at the first annual Black Hills Fat Tire festival. If you have never been the Black Hills you have got to make it a point to get there, it is beautiful. Awesome rides and a cool little town where the festival is held (Rapid City). The festival got off to a good start for the first year. They even had a beer brewed just for the event. And I was there so that alone brought a certain level of bad assness to the event.
The event really got going on Saturday with an XC race and all kinds of group rides and skills clinics going on. Sunday alot of the same occured but they threw in a hill climb race to make it exciting, fun had by all.
Sunday evening I was hanging around the local brew pub and got to talking with a few riders. Angela from The Bicycle Village in Denver (Which is a Specialized dealer) mentioned a ride going out the following day. After a couple of beers and some late night swiming I said I was in (I typically ride by my lonesome in strange places). Turned out being a pretty cool ride, other than I got a bit ahead of the group and got a tad lost (maybe rode a few extra miles). There was some nice rocky climbs which of course were followed by nice downhills and a couple "Sweet" jumps. We got to one point on the trail and one local mentioned she typically see's sheep up on the surronding cliffs. None of us saw them until we began to ride again, and with a little school girl screech Angela pointed out the beasts upon the cliffs. "Yeeeaaa" I was so excited I had never seen them before. So all in all it was a rad ride.
In a non-riding related story... I was about to head out to grab some dinner Monday night and stupidly thought its South Dakota I am going live free and not grab the helmet, I was only going a few blocks away. So I went out and hopped on the Ducati and headed to dinner, sans helmet. As soon as I finished eating and headed to the parking lot it began to rain, great... As soon as I pulled away from the lot it began to pour, and than hail. Which is quite uncomfortable. The great thing was the hail grew in size, about the diameter of a penny. Which normally would suck but when not wearing a helmet it becomes ridiculosly painful. The two blocks left back to the hotel was some of the most intense pain I have ever felt. So pretty much what I am getting at, IS ALWAYS WEAR YOUR HELMET... ALWAYS!!!
So I recommend making plans for next memorial day to head into the Black Hills and check out the festival in Rapid City. I guarantee you will have a blast, fa schizzelle!!
