Race Report (Day 2 - Big Creek)
posted by M at 08:26 PM on April 06, 2008
Sunday was the second day of a two-race week. This time it was at Big Creek State Park in Polk City, IA. The course was a bit shorter than yesterday, but still windy nonetheless. The women's field was smaller, but still a good turnout. Just like yesterday, we all road strong together for the first 5 laps, then started to shake riders off in the last lap.
Unfortunately, however, today there was 4 rider crash half way through the race. There is still some speculation on how it happened, but it all started when the official pulled up on his motorcycle and started talking to us about cookies or something, while we are riding into a head wind! Irritating. Long story short, Maria's bike is took a beating, Kristin went to the hospital (don't worry, she'll be okay), and JoAnn appears to be fine as well. Ana was the fourth rider down, but she managed to get back up and hang with pack.
With three girls out, the race continued on. The pack holds tight all the way to the last 500 meters. Ana is ahead on the sprint, I pick up speed and breakaway, quickly to remember that I'm not much a sprinter, when 4 girls zoom passed me and I cross the finish line in 5th place.
It was a great day for PRC...Jane won the women's open, Kelli took 2nd (i think, maybe 3rd). Ana got 3rd in the Cat 4 and I obviously took 5th. Maria didn't finish, but we're all glad she's okay.
Next up...Iowa City RR and Old Capitol Crit!
