I selected two races that would be my warm up aka throw away races before our first team race in March. I also liked the idea of supporting new local races.
When we arrived it was raining and we only had about 45 minutes to get warmed up and register. It actually worked out pretty well. The race started on a dirt road which was nice so everyone could spread out but short lived because there was a traffic jam on the first steep climb and we had to get off our bikes and walk which always disappoints me because I can ride this stuff - I may be slow but part billy goat on my bike. Anyway as we started working our way through the course I had a really good idea what to expect - the two long Sea Otter climbs. I paced myself and stayed strong because I watched many racers blow up before they get to the top. The climb gets worse and there are two false summits - knowing this I passed quite a few.
The course was fun and fast until... I hit the paved climb and my legs became toast. I could hear Jenn H somewhere behind me. At the top we jumped back on the dirt and then we came to an intersection with no markers, so I followed the guy ahead me and ended up climbing a lot more (ouch). At the end we hit a paved road with no markers - then I really knew we were off course but wasn't sure where we were exactly.
Two riders headed down the hill and the women flagged us to come down. As I started down, I could see the tents and cars - yippee, home free !!! So I thought....
I was going 25+ and catching up with the other women. I was in good position, I knew I was 3rd or 4th overall so I was going to have a good finish. As I got closer to the other women, she traversed across the road in front of me and I had less than 15 - 20 feet - no time to react. I grabbed my brakes on impact and launched over her bike, next thing I remembered is being on the pavement with my head bouncing... Grabbing my brakes probably made the situation better because I went straight up and down, no sliding - I perfect endo (10 points) !! I had a couple small gashes and bruises, head and neck jacked but overall I was very happy to be in one piece.
I'll be back for the next one and I will finish 1st !!!!!
