Kim Wik's Journal

Burlingame Pro 123-6/2/09

Teammates: Furman, Vanessa, Baker, Kimmy, Karena, Joanna and myself.
Weather: HOT!
Field size: 52
Teams:  Pro Tibco, Pro Proman, Sugar, Vanderkitten, Metromint and others just can't remember.

I was really excited about this race because it was a team event and Eileen my coach was in town for the weekend.  Eileen also coaches other teammates, so that was an extra plus for her to be there and watch us in action.

Eileen and I got up early so that we could go and watch Monica and Evan race the 4's at 7:50 a.m.  It was a beautiful morning, especially since it started with Peet's and a scone.  Watching the girls race got me excited for my race but there was still this little voice in my head reminding me that Pro's are here and they are going to through down today.

Warming up under the tents was fabulous since it was so bloody hot out and thank you Drew for setting up for us.  You were a blessing that day.  Drew helped all the girls with their bike and getting final adjustment done.

Now come to the fun part, the race itself.  Lining up with all the racers was very exciting and nerve wracking at the same time.  Thoughts of, I hope I clip in ok, God I hope it doesn't go to fast, and Hopefully I won't get dropped.  At the start they were telling us that a cannon was going to start us.  So, we all were expecting it but it still scared the crap out of me.  I didn't realize how loud it was going to be.  I looked down the road and could see girls off the front already.  Oh boy this isn't going to be good.  I got into the pack and tried to calm myself and just focus on what is going on up the road.  I tried to move myself up in the pack but then always seemed to lose position in certain areas of the course.  That is something I am going to have to work on, holding position.  I can move up great but staying there is another story.  I thought coming into this race my fitness was good, which it was but I think I need to work on those short efforts more.  I would make my way up and get a little tired and not stay there.  Anyways, the race continued and we were coming out of the swooping turn to the start finish.  Girls wer shifting left.  I was more to the right of this shift and all of a sudden a girl goes down and there is carnage all over the street.  I managed to get around the crash but right away I start to think, Are any of my teammates in that crash.  I find Anna and yell for her that there was a crash. I am taking a head count and new that a couple of my girls had gone down.  Now it is survival mode.  I tell myself, just get through the race Kim and do the best you can.  I heard the announcer say Ali had 15 seconds on the pack so I dedided to give it a pull at the front.  As I moved up on the left I noticed Kat Carroll was coming with me, crap, why are you worried about little old me.  At one point she was coming over and I thought she might run me into the gutter but she just came and sat on my wheel, I think.  I put my head down and peddled to the best of my ability to make something happen.  I lasted until the sweeper and pulled off.  I saw the pack coming around and I was hoping I had enough to get back on and recover.  I did recover and finished the race.

Right after I was sorry to hear that Joanna and Baker went down in the crash.  I hate for anyone to get hurt, but when a teammate gets hurt it's even worse.

Did I enjoy myself in this race, no, not really.  I didn't feel like myself racing.  Not sure if is was because of all the Pro's or what but I am going to work hard for your next team race so that I am there mentally and physically for my team.

Joanna and Baker heal quickly so that you are there for San Rafael.  I wouldn't be the same without you two.  Furman, Kimmy, Vanessa, Karena....fabulous job racing.  You all left it out there on the race course.

Special thanks to Richard for being such a great support to me, I heard him on every lap giving me encouragment that I was doing a good job. Anna for coming and supporting us, it is great to have her on the side lines. Thank you Anna! Uncle Drew, you the man.  Jeanine for the awsome photos.  Adrianne for coming out and watching.  Evan, Monica and Lesley for staying to watch out race.  I hope I am not forgetting anyone.

Ladies, I love you all
