Just got home from camp. I met some new people, (including one of my teammates for the first time - Ana is the cat's pajamas!) rode some rad hills, kissed some rad puppies, drank way too much coffee, had awesome vegan burritos at Laughing Planet, missed Jake, did some laps around the Little 5 track in the dark, and got my feet wet with my new bike - yes, literally and figuratively.
Now I am really amped. Maybe I work differently than some, but seeing where I need to improve really motivates me. My strength is not what it has been at other points in time, but my gusto is back. It’s nice to like riding my bike again. It’s nice to feel ok, and know I can expect more from myself later on in the year. It’s nice to know some of the lessons that came hurling at me in my "sink or swim" first year stuck with me, too. I feel like I have a better idea of what is going on and what I am aiming for.
Coming home was a kick in the pants. As we flew over Wisconsin, all I could see was white. Bloomington was not a tropical paradise, but it wasn’t snow covered either. Yesterday morning Rebecca and I hit the road into some white out snow and a monster brain-freezing headwind, but we fared well enough and are all the tougher for it.
When I got home I pulled up the race schedule Donny had sent me back when, and picked through it to find my "A" races and put them in my own excel sheet. Then I scoured the internet to find out more about the races I wanted to do and filled them in the empty spots. I got in contact with Megan and Patti about 24-9 and 508 miles of Furnace Creek, and flirted with the ideas of heading West for some of their local events. I love the midwest: we have some strong ladies here and some tough terrain in parts, but I want to see what this West Coast hype is all about.
I am so stoked for this year. I feel like a great door has been opened for me with this magic little number 2 on my USAC license. I’m looking forward to getting stronger and maybe winning some races this year, but almost more than that, I'm looking forward to getting into the thick of it, getting in over my head, and learning the things I will need to know for 2009 to be even better!
I'm so grateful for this awesome group of ladies we have here on the PRC team. Getting to spend time with all of them was fantastic. I'm really looking forward to my move out to Des Moines in May so I can be more a part of the team. Until then... back to work.
