Stumpy 29er

This past weekend I decided to see what everyone is talking about with the 29 inch wheel compared to the 26 inch wheel. I ventured out to Annadel State Park in Santa Rosa, CA. There is great mountain biking there and many trails to explore on. The terrain is compact dirt with little rocks thrown in on most the trails. My first thought was that 29 inch wheel would feel sluggish and slow compared to the 26 inch wheel bikes, but to my surprise the Stumpy 29er performed really well on the trail. The conditions were sloppy due to the few hard days of rain earlier in the week. This rain exposed the rocks on the trail and made them bigger then normal. The Stumpy handled these rocks with ease because of the 29 inch wheel and 4 inches of travel.
My only thought of a disadvantage is the inability to be nimble in tight situations. I come from a downhill background and love to throw a bike around on the trail. It could just be because of my in experience on a 29 inch bike too.
Overall I think the 2008 Stumpjumper 29er is a sick bike. It picks up speed on trails and rolls over bumps smoother then a 26 inch due to the larger diameter. After my muddy ride I wanted to see the weight of the bike, so I went to a friends shop, Breakaway bikes, and weighed the bike in at 28 pounds stock!! My overall experience was fun and new and I’d give this bike an A-.....Check in next week for my entry for the 2008 Demo 8 with more pictures and a helmet cam video!!!!!
