I love going to training camps - because the whole goal of the camp is to get a good amount of training and not worry about anything else. For me it's great because I can do the workouts, but still take time in each day to get my other work done without it being too overwhelming!
This training camp was a good addition to my schedule because not only did I get to bring a lot of equipment and bikes to talk about I also did a talk on bike fitting and helped some people fine-tune their bike fit which is always good. It's nice when I make small changes and people say the next day that they already feel better!
The camp was only 5 days long, but that might be just right for me - especially with my schedule. So without too much extra detail here's a day by day breakdown
· Ride 3 hours - we rode up to the 6 mile point on Mt. Lemmon and back to the hotel. Perfect start to the camp. Four of us rode Transitions but being aero on Mt Lemmon doesn’t help much
· Run :50min we went to the end of Speedway and did a desert run – up, up, up and then back down. I love running trails and especially running downhill on trails. It was a fun run and Sam and the fast campers schooled me on the run
Day 2 – Sunday
· Ride 2 ½ hours – Gates Pass – we rode across Tucson today and then up and over Gate’s pass. It’s a gradual 5 mile climb on the East side and a steep 3 mile climb on the West side. Both sides hurt me – oh and I got dropped by Sam again – but today TJ was there to drop me too…
· Run :50 & stretching clinic. We ran from a little park along the bike path – out and back. It was a good run and then Paul led a stretching clinic. I never stretch, but probably should give it a try because my legs felt better after!
Day 3 – Monday
· Morning run 1:40. We ran up Sobino Canyon and then back down the road – it was a great trail run and was pretty challenging going uphill. I ran with Graeme from Ottawa and he kept me from slowing down too much. He’s getting ready for IM Arizona in a month so it’s not really fair that he’s way fitter then I am. But all in all a fun run!
· Swim 4000 yards. Paul led a stroke clinic but I just wanted to swim so I jumped into Sam’s lane and did her workout – 20x 100 on 1:30 followed by 5x 200 pull. YOWZER… I’m not in that good shape, but did pull my ass through 19 of the 100s before I missed the send off interval. Then I struggled through 4x 200 while she did 5. All in all a sobering swim session – but just what I needed!
Day 4 – Tuesday
· Ride 4 hours. Finally back on the bike! We were supposed to do a 5 hour ride today but it ended up more like 4 hours when we hit some road construction and decided to turn around instead of going through it. Good choice. 4 hours was enough.
· Run :20min. We did a transition run off the bike and man do my legs ever hate me. But 20 min was good and kept the blood flowing
· Swim 2000 yards. At 5pm Paul led a running clinic but I wanted to get in a little swim so I went to the pool for a solo 2000 yard session. Man swimming alone is boring. It’s funny to say that because I never talk to people when I swim with them, but just having other people to keep me going makes a difference. Anyway. 2000 fun yards. In and out.
Day 5 – Wednesday
· Mt. Lemmon – 5 hours. Man what a great ride. 25 miles up and 25 miles down (ok there are a few little bumps in the middle) but overall it’s just a gradual loooooong climb. I tried to stick at 250 Watts on the way up, but probably averaged more like 225 with the descents in there and a bit of a bad patch for 20 minutes at about mile 20. But a piece of blueberry pie at the top got me going and on the descent he routinely hit over 40MPH so that was fun!
· T-run – 20min. I wasn’t going to run but Pete shamed me into it – so 20 minutes later I was done with transition run #2 of the camp. Good times.
Overall a great camp – just the right amount of training to not burn me or the other campers out but enough to see some improvements and to feel the volume in my legs for sure!
