A Bike Questionnaire

posted by KitC at 02:11 AM on August 20, 2008

If you could have any one — and only one — bike in the world, what would it be?

I think that my perfect bike doesn't exist.  If it did exist, it would look like a Specialized Tricross with a set of Avid BB7 road disc brakes.  It would be capable of long road rides, hitting semi-technical singletrack and getting me back and forth to work.  Alternatively, a hardtail 29" mountain bike with a fork with a really good lockout for the same purposes.  If the question must be answered with a bike that exists, it would probably be a Gary Fisher Superfly.

Do you already have that coveted dream bike? If so, is it everything you hoped it would be? If not, are you working toward getting it? If you’re not working toward getting it, why not?

I don't think the Tricross is capable of handling disc brakes, even if I replaced the fork with one that had disc brake bosses.  If I'm constrained to that "bike that actually exists" thing, I'm a little leary of buying a carbon mountain bike.  I still eat it too often, and don't need to buy a new bike each time I lay it down.  If I only ever used it for non-technical courses, I might consider buying it.  Dreams are inherently impractical, so that's my excuse.

If you had to choose one — and only one — bike route to do every day for the rest of your life, what would it be, and why?

Probably a full loop of the whole Tech Trail system.  There some fun, flowy stuff at the Pilgrim Trails, some technical stuff on the TTT Loop, Barking Frog and Hairy Toad, and the awesome singletrack of Outer Limits and Twilight Zone.  I can't think of anything else better.

What kind of sick person would force another person to ride one and only one bike ride to do for the rest of her / his life?

I'm sure Hitler and/or Stalin would be in that person's family tree.

Do you ride both road and mountain bikes? If both, which do you prefer and why? If only one or the other, why are you so narrow minded?

I have both, ride both regularly, and would choose a mountain bike over a road bike 7 days a week and twice on Sunday.  Dirt is way more fun, and you don't have to deal with idiotic drivers.  In my mind, this is a tremendously easy question to answer.

Have you ever ridden a recumbent? If so, why? If not, describe the circumstances under which you would ride a recumbent.

Never ridden a "real" recumbent, only some stationary bikes.  I would consider riding one, because it's a bike, and I just love riding bikes.

Have you ever raced a triathlon? If so, have you also ever tried strangling yourself with dental floss?

Nope, no triathlons.  The swimming turns me off.  I'd try it once, just to say I did it, but it's not something I'll start training for.

Suppose you were forced to either give up ice cream or bicycles for the rest of your life. Which would you give up, and why?

There are lots of desserts that I like that are not ice cream (e.g., cookies, cake, brownies, etc.), and nothing that can substitute for riding a bike.  Another non-issue.

What is a question you think this questionnaire should have asked, but has not? Also, answer it.

What's your tire recommendation for <insert trail here>?  Ride whatcha brung!
