Found a helluva hills workout!

posted by Clyde at 07:20 PM on April 15, 2008

Usually I ride east out and west back, but due to the stiff breeze from the southwest today I decided to head out in that direction first and charted a new route for myself.  South on Johnson, west on Orchard Lake to Middlebelt, and that's where the fun began.  Middlebelt has some decent hills on it, nothing too severe or too long but some good watt burners.  Then I hit Maple and it got crazy.  Went east on Maple and those hills were a different story.  Some were fairly long and shallow, some were pretty steep and short.  Took that over to Franklin and went north.  Didn't realize I was hopping on a roller coaster.  There's barely a flat spot on that road between Maple and Long Lake, but man that was fun.  Completed the loop by taking Long Lake west back to Middlebelt and then headed home.  What a great variety for hills work.  I hammered pretty hard through the whole ride and consciously tried to stay in higher gears than I normally would instead of going easy on myself.  I managed to keep an average 85 cadence, covering 20.31 miles in 1:03:35 for a 19.17 mph avg with a max of 35.80.  Can't wait to do it again!

Sweet, what time of day did you do this?
How was the traffic?

I started about 6:30, traffic was light to moderate and mostly considerate. The shoulder on Middlebelt is narrow in some places and broken pavement occasionally forces you well into the lane, but Maple, Franklin, and Long Lake are in good shape with nice easements for cycling.
