Nice day for Tour de Cure

posted by Clyde at 05:49 PM on June 08, 2008

The weather was kind of sketchy on the way to Island Lake with a few sprinkles, plus with the substantial rain from the night before I figured it was going to be a wet ride.  Luckily, the rain stopped before the ride started, but the roads were still pretty wet for most of the ride so the bike and I got pretty messy over the course of 65 miles.  The wind was a little stiff at times, and after the sun had been up for a while it got pretty warm, but it was still great weather for a long haul.

The route was supposed to be 70 miles long, but according to my cycle computer it turned out to be about 65. It was still a helluva ride and by the time I crossed the line I wasn't wishing for the extra 5 miles.  I hooked up with three other riders right at the start so that made the ride much easier as we kept a good, organized paceline for the majority of the ride which really cut down the effort necessary to complete the distance.

Alright, enough blah blah blah.  The stats:
65.05 miles in 3:33:53 for an average of 18.24 mph (47 mph max down an 8% grade!) and 83 cadence.  I figured it would have been higher as I had a good general pace but I'm assuming the low average was due to the abundance of rather decent hills that I had to ride up, some of which required periods in 34x28T.  So, the cadence is what it is and I'm rather pleased that I could maintain 18+ mph over the distance.

So i missed you @ the start we were still waiting for others in our group to start. We still finished in 3:50:53 and that hill just before the proving grounds was a hit, especially coming down!

They weren't exactly organized with the whole registration thing or in getting the ride off on time, so apparently I headed out before the "official" start, but I don't think UCI will be coming after me for it. :-)

That hill was a bear going up, but at least my legs were still pretty fresh at that point. Going down was a blast. I've never gone that fast before, and the funny thing is I didn't even think about the fact that at that speed I probably only had about 2 square inches of rubber on each tire that was touching the road. Talk about a rush!

CT have any other rides coming up? I'm not registered in nearly enough events yet this summer.
