BikeTown Africa

One incredible thing we did last year was to work with Bicycling Magazine on their Biketown Africa program. That involved going to Africa and giving away 200 bikes to non-profits and non-governmental organizations that were helping with outreach work for AIDS patients. The agencies have been using the bikes we helped to distribute to deliver medicine and healthy food to patients that are stuck in their homes. Some agencies saw up to a six-fold increase in the number of visits to patients that they were able to do as a result of having the bikes. That was an amazing experience for us and we hope to continue working on Biketown Africa and other things like it. We’ve even started something called ‘Sister Shop’ which is a non-profit program that helps bike retailers in the United States connect with bike retailers in Africa. The American retailers help finance an African entrepreneur and have an on-going relationship with them where they mentor and train them. We’re still finalizing the structure of the Sister Shop program and we’ve already recruited some interested retailers here in the USA.
