Indiana Jones and the adventure of the crystal skull

posted by Dude at 12:14 AM on July 09, 2008

With the 105 degree heat weighing down on us like a fat dog, my girlfriend and I ducked into the movies for the first time in a loooong time.

After convincing the ticket clerk we were both students home from college (and still paying $9) we hurried into the air conditioning, paused briefly to bask in the sweet musk of liquid butter and then hurried towards the movie cave.

Comfortably in our seats we laughed and scoffed at the trailers making outward promises to each other ("oh we should totally go see that") while making inward promises to ourselves ("I hope she's topless in that") or ("I bet there is a really bittersweet affect in the way that is done").

Then the lights dimmed further, people shushed each other and entertainment ensued.

All said and done, don't go looking for a movie.  Go looking for an amusement park for your eyes.  Stephen Spielberg does his best to keep the heavily-George-Lucas-influenced "show" on track.  I liked it but for god's sake, George Lucas SUCKS.  Everything he touches, yes is a billion dollar jack pot.  BUT he takes someone as beloved, sacred, inspirational as Indiana Jones and tries to turn him into Lord of the Harry Potter Die Hard Clone Wars dribble.

Thats where spielberg steps in.  Taking cues from every academy award winning film he has done he tames the hollywood candy that is Lucasfilms, he is the salty to the Lucas sweet.  Balancing it out happily.

So, the point i'm trying to make is that this film is worth seeing on the big screen.  I enjoyed it, as I did Harry Potter, Die Hard (which really is the standard for action movies.  When you see an action movie you say "yeah, but it wasn't as good as Die Hard") and Star Wars Clone Wars.  While at the same time it angers me and makes me cringe with anticipatory excitment throughout the whole movie.

It is a guilty pleasure.
