Santa Cruz Commute Cup Challenge!!!

posted by at 01:59 PM on June 05, 2008

While driving into work this morning with my usual car pool group, I began to wonder if it was a viable option to commute (by bicycle) to and from work for an entire work week. That would work out to 80 miles a day and 400 miles in the week. At first it was just a distant thought that was fueled by my ever increasing frustration at spending 2 hours of my day in a car. Why not instead spend 4 to 5 hours a day on my bike? Plus instead of killing the earth (which is about the equivalent to kicking puppies and small children) I could get a killer workout and get into the kind of shape that you only get from things like CrossFit.

So my idea for the Santa Cruz Commute Cup Challenge was born. After sharing the idea with a few co-workers who share my hellish drive, they began to cast doubts as to how many days I could make it. I was given two to three days maximum from some of the more experienced cyclists. But I don't think they realize how incredibly stubborn I am. Probably not my most flattering quality, I do have a bit of bull-headedness in me. Once when I was ten, I spent a weekend in a fort in the woods near my house in Spokane just to prove to my Uncle I could survive in the "woods" without any normal amenities. I showed him....and caught a nasty cold among many bug bites. But with this, instead of pesky mosquitos, I have to come head to head with Mount Madonna not once but twice a day. If you have never ridden up Mount Madonna, she is a worthy adversary.

The Challenge begins on Monday and all my co-workers from across the Mount Madonna hill are invited to join in on all or part of the experiment. There even is a growing band from San Jose/Campbell who are doing their own challenge now. I openly welcome any bets that are placed against my success. In fact please feel free to comment below on how many days you think I will make it, it will only add fuel to my fire! How many days can i go riding to and from work???????

Rachael, you're right, I didn't know how incredibly stubborn you are. Maybe because of your "Half Time" reputation overshadows it, I don't know... Anyhow, I'm rooting for ya to finish all five days!
