Innovate or Die Ride to Interbike - Day 3
posted by rusty nations at 01:14 PM on September 19, 2007
If you ever need to have a bachelor party, the Golden Trout Inn just outside of Kernville, California is apparently a pretty good place to host the festivities. According to ‘Innovate or Die Express’ co-rider Randy ‘NASA’ Berthold there was a pretty spectacular celebration that came to an end with a fitting line that it’s probably best not to repeat here.
Fortunately Kernville is now some 135-miles in arrears after one very big day from the foot of the Sierra around Lake Isabella and over a few passes to the eastern edge of Death Valley. Lots of miles, but the six of us were blessed with lots of tailwind to keep them clicking over. Don Langley, the king of GPS, says we climbed 65-miles and descended 70-miles including one amazing 13-mile descent that averaged about 45-miles-per. Pretty dandy when you’re riding with five guys that you can trust to not do anything crazy in your general vicinity. There’s also all the miles, probably 120 or so, that Chris D'Aluisio and Don Langley pulled. That was like a downhill only better because much of the time it was into a headwind or up a climb and without them camped out on the front we’d all be much, much more tired tonight. Thanks Chris and Don, thanks from everyone.
After crossing the Sierra, we’re definitely in the wide open west with mile after mile of plants no taller than a creosote bush, zero traffic and amazing early evening sunshine. It’s pretty obvious in a fragile eco-system like this that even a slight temperature fluctuation caused by global warming could have a disastrous effect.
Tomorrow, again not so much a rest day, is 111-miles across Death Valley to Nevada. From the front porch of the decidedly funky Panamint Lodge we can see the first climb of the day. 3,000-feet in 10-miles. It looks hard, but I guess climbing up a three-step ladder right now would be difficult.
