Friday Night Lights
posted by id* at 02:24 PM on June 02, 2008
Friday night in San Jose California and it still feels like spring. Instead of a typical Friday night of wings, beers and big screen TVs we took our fixed gears and headed to the velodrome. We are blessed with a local track and a local organizing committee that takes the extra effort to run quality races and encourage development at the same time.
Friday we rolled up in time to watch the Cat 4 Scratch race; the Pro 1/2/3 Scratch race; some Women's Chariot races; the Sprint semi-finals and finals; the Snowball and some other Miss and Out elimination races. With local pros Ben and Andy Jacques-Maynes adding some excitement it made for great racing and a fun night.
I know everyone doesn't live near a velodrome, and doesn't have Friday night races to support. But there are lots of ways you can support your local cycling series. Go to a local junior race and buy a raffle ticket. Take part in a local century that your shop, your team or your friends are organizing. Get involved in the local cycling advocacy group. Promote bike commuting at work.
Having cycling related events in our communities is privilege that we are lucky to have. At the Riders Club we love supporting local cycling initiatives and will continue to do so. We encourage you to do the same.
